The Golden Treasury By Francis Turner Palgrave 1861 - Cambridge - Macmillan and Co. 6.5 by 4.5 , (12), 332pp. DETAILS A first edition of Palgrave s popular The Golden Treasury. Bound in original green cloth with gilt lettering and decoration. With Palgrave s signature on letter from his granddaughter, tucked in. With Burn s binders label on the rear pastedown. First edition, December 1861 eighth thousand. Half title in Gothic type, four notes on page 323, and without price on spine. The Golden Treasury of English Songs and Lyrics is a popular anthology of English poetry, originally selected for publication by Francis Turner Palgrave in 1861. It was considerably revised, with input from Tennyson, about three decades later. Palgrave excluded all poems by poets then still alive. The book continues to be published in regular new editions, still under Palgrave s name. Francis Turner Palgrave (1824 - 1897) was a British critic and poet. CONDITION The binding is loose. The text block is split in two with pages detached but present. There is mild wear to the extremities, including bumping and some discolouration to the spine. Internally the pages are generally clean and bright with the occasional spot or handling mark and light spotting on the free endpapers. There is an ink inscription on the front free endpaper.
